Finding a reliable alternatives for SPSS as an open source and free , is the aim of this collection , I was planning to make a quick tutorial about open source statistics as a guide for doctors and researchers who shifted to open source , so i believe to list the open source alternative to the famous commercial statistical package ” SPSS ” and mathmatica . This article , covers , the open source , cross platforms , as well as the office add-ons and extensions either for Microsoft Excel or OpenOffice Calc .
1- R – Language : http://www.r-project.org/ :
Is an open source language and environment for statistical computing and graphics . released under GNU license . R provide : inear and nonlinear modelling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering, …) and graphical techniques .
2 – Dataplot http://www.itl.nist.gov/div898/software/dataplot/homepage.htm :
Open source , public-domain , multi-platform ( Windows , Linux , Unix , and VMS ) for scientific visualisation , statistical analysis and non-linear modelling . It has very rich , organised and simple tutorials list in its main site .
3 – FreeMat http://freemat.sourceforge.net/ :

Professional but open source – free , environment for rapid engineering and scientific prototyping and data processing , its an alternative for IDL and Matlab . License : GPL , and runs on Windows , Linux and Mac OS X .
4 – Salstat http://salstat.sourceforge.net/ :
Open source statistical package , already covered it in here .
5 – MacAnova http://www.stat.umn.edu/macanova/macanova.home.html :
Open source , multi-platform ( Windows , Mac OSX , and Linux ) even works for Dos and old Mactintosh, an old software , MacAnova can be listed under General purpose statistical software , but its more into , variance and related models , matrix algebra and time series analysis , as well as uni- and multi-variate exploratory statistics. . Its under active and continuous development .

Open source , statistical software for epidemiological statistics , its written in HTML / Javascript , so it can run from a web server or a local host . – expect an incoming usability and performance review -

Open source interactive statistical and data visualisation system . released for Windows , Mac OSX and Linux – Unix a like systems .
8 -PSPP http://www.gnu.org/software/pspp/pspp.html :
Well i can count this as the official open source , simple alternative for SPSS , Its FREE as in NO Charge , NO COST , and Free COPY . simple , user friendly interface , released under GPL v3 , with very rich , heavy user manual . OS – Operating Systems supported : Linux , Mac OS X , Unix ( FreeBSD , OpenBSD and NetBSD ) , as well as Windows . Source code is also available for download for developers and coders . Linux users can choose binaries for their prferable distro ” Fedora , Ubuntu , Debian , OpenSuSE . and PSPP is also an official package comes with Knoppix based distros , and Epilinux OS . distro .

Tanagra : is a free open source DATA MINING software for academic and research purposes. It proposes several data mining methods from exploratory data analysis, statistical learning, machine learning and databases area.
10 – Simfit http://www.simfit.man.ac.uk/ : Simfit is a free software OpenSource Windows/Linux package for simulation, curve fitting, statistics, and plotting, using a library of models or user-defined equations.
11 -SOFA http://www.sofastatistics.com/ : Open source , user friendly statistical software designed for statistics , data analysis , and reporting . It became very popular , as its easy to install , on different platforms ” Windows , Linux and Mac OS X ” , has very simple to advanced tutorials and easy to read and learn user guide . we already made a quick review it in here .

OpenOffice is an extandable project built to be extended through plugins , add-ons , extensions and macros ” Maco in Ms. Office as well ” . OOo Statistics is a macros suite , for performing basic statistical analysis with OpenOffice .

16 – SAGE – http://nb.sagemath.org/ : SAGE Free , Open source , Mathematics software , its a revolutionary project as it can run online , SAGE is built using Python , so it runs on any platform that supports python ( Linux , Unix , Mac OS X , and Windows ) . Available for download under GPL license .

Free , Open source , Statistical Data Visualization System , works for Windows , Linux / Unix and Mac OS X . released under GPL License .
19 – Statist - http://wald.intevation.org/projects/statist : Small , Open source portable but terminal based , statistical package , its terminal based application ( Console , Text based ) .
20 -XLToolBox : http://xltoolbox.sourceforge.net/ :
Open source add-on for excel to analyze and present data . works with the most recent Ms. Office .
