3D Slicer is a free and open source multi-platforms ( Windows , Mac OSX , Linux ) , medical visualization and image analysis , Current version is 3.4 , available for download with many fixes and improvements . Its built for medical scientists and clinical researchers , with functionality of segmentation , registration and 3D visualization of multi-modal image data , as it contains an advanced image analysis algorithms for diffusion tensor imaging , functional MRI and image-guided therapy .

3D Slicer is written mostly in C programming language , and the source code is available under BSD license . As 3D Slicer is started as a master thesis back in 1998 , it has a very rich history log of funding and support as well as a contributers of developers , users and commercial supports .
Ubuntu Linux Repositories contain the current version of Slicer 3.4 , installation through Ubuntu software center .
