any watcher to medical and healthcare related software development and industry can refer to many reasons , regarding my question , though , are these answers really fit or logical enough for us , though what’s the impact of  cost and price of developing a medical or healthcare related software on the progress of the medical software development .

but first lets back to the  question :

Professional Medical softwares , do they have to be that expensive ?

reasons i can gather from many discussions :

  • Its a professional corporate   production .
  • Usually its developed with non free development tools ( programming language , IDEs , Editors , Servers ..etc )
  • On demand : the claim that indicate the developers / company developed its very first medical and healthcare related applications on demand . then here the decision comes to popularize the project or developing another project with the same goal and concepts .
  • The claim that there is no enough competitors .
  • The solution aimed to solve many problem and save you time . so be grateful and consider the price as a GIFT .

on the other hand , in some countries regarding Egypt as an example , expnsive EMR solutions as example , are poorly distributed and used in clinics , and many private hospitals , regarding the healthcare industry itself is a poor . so i had to look to the problem after several discussion with CEOs of some companies which developed local EMRs and Medical solutions . they regard the main causes :

  • We use expensive technologies in development , testing and production .
  • The user ( doctor ) is not interested in buying EMRs especially when it comes to cost . ( doctors were got paid 42$ a month till Sep 2008 ) .

So why not using technologies that cheap No FREE to make such solutions ?

regarding there are many medical and healthcare related software already open source , free and based on open source technologies , but are they :

  1. Supported ?
  2. Simple to  install , use , manage and configure ?
  3. professional enough to handle and compete with the professional enterprise solutions ?

a developer and open source defender once told me even the professional software ( sometimes ) are not well supported , user friendly , but its good marketed and distributed more than the open source , and-or , free ones .

So what makes the commercial medical and health care related ( even the those which  professional , not user friendly , or supported ) well known ?
