Medical and Healthcare related software at Software Repositories/Directories

Long walk through many Software repositories , To find new classifications , new categories added ,new tags. everyday … we finally got shying new categories for healthcare and medical software … Of course am talking about Free and Open source software …

A discussion with Moaz A.e Eldeskey ( GP ,and developer ) , Ahmed Shabana ( Linux Administrator and software developer ) & Waeel Gaber ( Neurologist , and Computer Geek ) .. . about this , issue, ( The Lack of Medical / Health care related Open source software and/or their support ) , we reach a conclusion about that issue , which we find ( somehow ) reflecting a bad progress of the medical informatics area … althou there are some Questions about this situation , but first lets trying to analyze the issue , Development side , Medical side , as well as the Market side ..

1-There is a Need That force us , or inspire us to ( create , Invent . Design and develop ) Medical software .. Is That Need Disappear , Or its Miscommunication and/or Misunderstanding to what is the doctors want ( Need ) ?

2-Many of The developers for the healthcare / medical software are issue related ( Involved somehow in Healthcare filed ) …. and That solve the miscommunication issue ( when the user made what he needs ) but we still talking about the geeks ( healthcare related ) … are their products / projects ( alive ) well supported and updated ???

3- Many of the Authors and Developers look to make their softwares Commercial , so The Healthcare software is not an Opensourced area ( mainly ) … , so the progress to involve developers in developing process of medical software is rare .. So Commercial software means narrow area and selected users , How Come we Expect from This kind of developers to make community when they are planning for Commercial lunch and distribution ???.

4-Classification of medical software is Hazy ( somehow ) , otherwise it classified as scientific software .. the lack of software , and lack of number of people who are interested , may be there is no knowledge of the classification needed … as my Teacher : Dr. Walid M . Suggest : ( You can not blame the admins for not interested in what is not interested ) …

There is New wave in the Web , That some of software repositories , added sections to list Healthcare and Medical software …

  • Hotscribts.com : That Created a new category , in PHP scripts and programs , called ( Healthcare ) , That category created Months ago , as i remember ( and planned to write about it since i saw it ) .Healthcare Category in PHP classification holds about 14 Script/program , but in Python it holds none ( As i remeber there are a famous 2 emr. Made with Python/Zope ) , and other Clinic and research center management , developed using python ,( i wrote a review about it year ago ) .
  • Sourceforge.net : Takes Special care of Medical software and Bio-Informatics Related software , so you have 2 categories :
  • Debian Packages : The software repository for Debian (*.deb ) , there is no such category for medical related software .. althou there are many EMRs , can run on Debian and Debian Based Distros . But :
    • There is Scientific Category ( Basic tools for scientific work )
    • You May use The Search ( Powered by Google ) : as for EMR , To Get a list of related medical (emr) software , which in the Debian Repositories .
    • Interested to see a medical software that sun with Debian/Debian Based Distros . You may Take a look .
  • rubyforge.org : as many may consider Ruby as new programming language , and it just float on the surface the past few years , even it’s an old one somehow , but it seems Ruby did not get the attention of many developer whom are into the medical informatics development .
  • Google Code : Google Code seems to got more attention from many open source software developers , But what do i have to search about , I tried EMR in the search text filed and all what i get Only one project , Try EHR ( You’ll get 2 ) .. :

(p.s : if you want to start your search journey about free opensource software , sometimes you may see discribtion without code or download ) ]

Linux for Clinics

LinuxforClinics , is a small portal for clinic’s software that run on linux , ohhh ,can you check the FAQ , and Downloads Not The Homepage ?!! cause as mention in FAQ :

It’s Ubuntu Bases Linux , That Contains Several Software For Clinic Practice …

From the frontpage , the normal user can not get the summarized idea about the system . Anyway , I used this CD’s Project ( it’s Not a Distro Yet ) . as demonstration in my last seminar , about medical practice in medicine .

( My Desktop Ubuntu’s Screenshot : for more Screenshots )

It has a fantastic addition of pre-installed , Clinic’s software also it customize the Ubuntu’s Default Installed Packages , removed the unnecessary packags , and suggest new other packages ,
we Really appreciate their work . as they take care of the main issues that face the Clinic’s Users in This area :

  • Pick up , simple to install , easy to use , and manage , and widly supported Linux Distro to work on .( Ubuntu )
  • The Peri-Installed Packages , save the common daily ( normal ) user ,the mess he might meet , configuring them and get them ready to use ….
  • As they Suggest and Manage the Medical Package , they also , remove unnecessary packages ..
  • Suggesting a set of different Clinic’s softwares , that will give the user the opputunity to try and choose , what’ll fit fior their needs .

The Packages included are small set , but i did not install the system and worked with it ( yet ) ..

but what if the user already has Ubuntu , installed and running , is there is any downloadable , peri-configurable package ?

Yes : You may download them from here : download the Only Package you need , in *.deb .

BioFox , Medical Develpment Move with Firefox

What is BioFox ?

BioFOX aims at implementing various bioinformatics tools as an extension on the
Mozilla and Iceweasel browsers.

Whats FireFox?
Firefox is a Cross-Platform ( Windows , OSX , Linux ) , Web Browser , That extend it’s capability to allow developers to develop an extension for it ….

Why Firefox ?!

In My Opinion Firefox deserves to be more than a web browser , and i wonder why not seeing more medical applications ( extensions ) for Firefox ? some developer asking me why ?

So why Not ? :

  1. Firefox is ( almost ) the Most Popular Browser.
  2. It’s Easy to Use , simple to understand and deal with .
  3. Easy to Install , Manage , Uninstall and Backup , Firefox Extensions
  4. For Developers : it’s easy to Develop a Firefox extensions
  5. The Extension Could be simple application , a Tool , or heavy application that can do full functions as the standalone applications ..

Here is a tiny small list of Firefox extensions that related to Medical and Health Field :

Medical/Scientific Softwares at Linux repositories

In My Hypernation mode i was testing and trying some new linux distro editions , such as Linux Mint , Ubuntu , DreamLinux , Elive , Pclinux 2007 , Samlinux and finally Mandriva Linux Spring 2007…*

Linux as Free Open Source Operating System , provides new variations in options and choices of the daily common use software with free alternatives ones , such as Open Office (writer , spreadsheet , Presentation , drawing , base ) as an Alternative for Ms.Office ( word , excel , power point ,and access ) ……..But The real disadvantage of using Linux was : ( for normal users ) is how to install software!! , there was no default standard install system for the softwares , each software with special Instruction file to configure and install it , sometimes the instructions need an advanced user to understand and do it , and some software need an Extra Library to be installed …

These day there is many Solutions for Installing software on linux , such as Autopackage* and Online Packages through Package Managers , and Complete Guides to install Software on many linux Distro , even Windows Softwares through Windows Emulator as Wine …

add-remove2.jpg

Easy to install the software you need through the Package Manager , which is the common feature of known and usable Linux Operating systems …Package Manager as Synaptic Package Manager simple and easy to use , Search or Browse For the software you seek , then select it and click apply , in mins/secs ( according to your internet connection and the Software/s You choose ) you’ll be ready to use this software …

pc-synaptic.jpg

Using the Debian Based Linux ( eLive , LinuxMint , DreamLinux , Ubuntu ) , i enjoyed the amount of software i installed and tried from the Debian repositories , but something i missed , The Medical Software like EMRs , Image Analysis tools ,…….etc
there is a Scientific and Mathematics categories at Debian Packages -link- , and with some Biological softwares , but huge lack of Medical software …..

science.jpg

in the first lost archive of goomedic.com i wrote about debian-med and some medical softwares which run on linux which suggest some good progress in Medical-Linux software and usability , but using the Linux repositories makes me wonder why in linux world we always have defect in medical software and attention to spread and publish these software .?!!!!

The message is ” We need to see Varation of medical software at Linux repositories , and Multi format Linux software Packages ” Deb , RPM , TGZ …” or Package the Software in Autopackage format ….

Conclusion :
regrading to the search and use of Linux we do and the suffring for lack of alternative Free Open Source medical packages on the common linux repositories , seems it’s not lack of Production as it’s Lack of use and decrease in number of the Users …

The Request :
1-adding Multi Packages format for the different Linux Distros at the official software site
2-packaging this software to the linux repositories ….
3-Using Autopackage
4-adding the software in any medical software directories and sourceforge.net
