DICOM Viewers : Free , commercial and open source DICOM viewers .

DICOM viewers , and applications are very handy tools for radiologists , DICOM applications have a major impact on their work , DICOM software development , has interest from developers , engineers and researchers as well . but well what about what are the DICOM Viewers doctors can use ?! which means : UI friendly , OS compliant , with many other usable features , and most importantly how much they cost ?!

In this short run post i listed  some DICOM viewers doctors can use , into 3 groups  commercial , free and open source . i hope this list will be useful for who is looking for DICOM viewers .

Commercial DICOM Viewers :

1- DICOM Files Manager ( Commercial – Windows ) -link- :
Small size application , but it meant for greater tasks more than opening and viewing DICOM images , such as Searching text within DICOM file and highlight the relevant tag. Reveal the exact problematic tags in case of having corrupted DICOM file , Search texts in DICOM files directory and Update DICOM file tags.

2-Escape Medical Viewer ( Commercial , Windows, OSX , Linux ) -link- :
Escape Medical Viewer for Windows (EMV) is the fast, lightweight, easy-to-use, cross-platform DICOM viewer, converter and anonymizer that also supports most common image formats. EMV opens DICOM medical images plus all QuickTime import formats.

3-Canvas Scientific Imaging Edition ( Commercial , Windows ) -link- :
Its medical image editing and analyzer . it supports DICOM importing , exporting , viewing and reading.

4-PowerDicom ( Commercial , Windows )  -link- :
a DICOM complete suite including DICOM viewer , Analysis tool , DICOM editor , and DICOM  converter , it has other useful features listed for other 4 editions ( Personal , Basic , Professional , Expert ) . There is mobile USB edition also included with Expert edition of PowerDicom .

Free DICOM Viewers :

1-ImplantViewer ( Free , Windows ) -link- :
Performing 3D operations on medical images , such as medical simulation , its more than a DICOM viewer as it concerns more in simulation .

2-ezDICOM ( Free , Windows ) -link- :
DICOM viewer and reader , with command line tool , and start point for programmers . ezDICOM display most medical images: MRI, CT, X-ray, and ultrasound

3-DicomWorks -link-:
is more than a free DICOM viewer and converter , its a complete DICOM suite , it can export to common images file extensions , AVI for series , localized to many languages .

4-Syngo fastView ( Free , Windows ) -link- :
DICOM Viewer but with more handy features .

Open source DICOM Viewers :

1-Aeskulap Viewer ( Open source  ) – link- :
Aeskulap is able to load a series of special images stored in the DICOM format for review. Additionally it is able to query and fetch DICOM images from archive nodes (also called PACS) over the network. Aeskulap tries to achieve a full open source replacement for commercially available DICOM viewers.

2-ImageJ -link- :
It can display, edit, analyze, process, save and print 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit images. It can read many image formats including TIFF, GIF, JPEG, BMP, DICOM, FITS and “raw”. It supports “stacks”, a series of images that share a single window.
ImageJ is developed by Wayne Rasband , at the Research Services Branch, National Institute of Mental Health, Bethesda, Maryland, USA.

4-openDICOM.NET -link- :
DICOM library, console tools, DICOM viewer/browser for Mono/.NET and Beagle Desktop Search Plugin. The project supports ACR-NEMA and DICOM file formats and provides transcoding to XML. It is written in C# and licensed under (L)GPL.

6- WIndows Dicom – link -:
WIndows Dicom Open Viewer, is a simple viewer for DICOM medical images, to be used especially on removable devices (such as Patient CDs). Partially based on ezDICOM sources.

7-Dicom Explorer -link , download – :
is a handy tool. It’s a small program which helps you can help you to view both all the tags/attributes inside a DICOM file (including ACR nema format)and images. Some image processing methods are also provided.

9- TutatiX  – link -:
TutatiX it’s a Dicom Viewer written in python. TutatiX try to be a guide to known how Dicom works and how to develop an application. The must important part of TutatiX it’s the documentation that must be detailed and easy to understand.

10-V3D Viewer – link -:
V3D-Viewer is a Dicom and “Philips V3D 3DRA” Medical Volume Viewer based on .Net and the VTK library. With marching cubes, 3d planes and (3D texture) volume rendering, including histogram transparency and intensity curve selection tool.

11- pMiniPACS – link -:
pMiniPacs is dicom viewer workstaion software just like PIVIEW.It also acts as store-scp.It completes almost functions in PIVIEW.It acts as a minius PACS system.

    Thanks for this freeware list. Some of them do 3D; it’s great, no need for proprietary volume rendering crap anymore. Which one you may recommend has better volume rendering quality then Fovia HDVR?

    Thanks for the comment , i stick to the open source and mostly linux ware . but i like DICOMWorks and i use Aeskulap DICOM on linux/ubuntu and debian .
