EMR on Phones ! Usability and Security !

As a Windows Mobile 6.1 , 6.5 user , i tested many of medical and health applications for windows mobile smartphones and pocket pc , planning to write series of review about them ( hope to start soon as i know my vacations schedule in the new work ) , however i found EMR suite application is EMR app for pocket pc as a freeware listed in many pocket pc portals .

There was not statistics , or users reviews about this application , or even a grand wide opinion about it , however after i tested it for sometime now , and it was great i wonder about if the other aspects of this project were covered by the developers or not !

As a developer and a doctor , i will make it simple the way i see it for the readers to decide : is it good idea to build Standalone EMR applications for phones ?!

Standalone EMR for Phone devices will be a single user application for sure , as well as it’ll stand to the concept of local data storage format .

Standalone EMR for the phone is very limited regarding how other doctors , medical practitioners will read and check the profiles , or the medical history of certain case , however regarding the usage of single user EMR , i suggest it’ll be more beneficial for the family physicians regarding they are moving a lot , and used to work alone .

Security :
Local storage area on the phone storage either internal phone memory or storage card will compromise security as if this phone got stolen , phone lose ,or data lose happened , both scenarios is putting the patient profiles and medical files in the emr in security risk .

Solutions :
Phones are just clients , regarding they can be very useful to run client side application for the server sided core EMR , allowing medical practitioners to add , modify and retrieve EMR data with ease ,and regarding the web2.0 area cloud computing is the answer so far as there are many living usable examples for professional emr as iphone clients , or windows mobile clients , even though security measures and techniques should be applied to prevent any hacking or illegal access to the cloud when the phone is stolen or lost .
