Online medical dictionary , and Web1.0 era !!
There are several specialized medical dictionaries online , Though this post about 2 issues :
- What is the goal of medical dictionary !?
- What can we use it for and When ?!
- Some of those online medical dictionaries which i frequently use .
The goal of medical dictionary :
Medical dictionaries are too much different from classic terms , words dictionaries , as its designed with issue in mind : ( the researcher seeks for more than a meaning of a Term ) . So its not just about listing medical terms together , as its more about ,including and attaching information ( either brief , or full ) description .
Sometimes the medical dictionary uses images , photos as in Mosby Medical dictionary , in its printed version as well as its online edition .
What can we use it for and When ?
as my first day at medical school i got my first gift as medical student from my father ( Handbook Medical dictionary and Mosby Medical dictionary ) i realized medical dictionaries are one of the most needed resources for medical students , using tips , indexes and / or even browsing the dictionary was way too much medical knowledge . So i suggest you tell your medical student to depend on it . ( sadly many medical students don’t do anymore )
Now in my Medical practice , i can say ,i am in daily need for Medical Dictionaries , but Online Medical dictionary is most resources right now for seeking medical in formations . and way too faster as well .
So Online Medical dictionaries are most resources needed for medical practice . its not that tricky as EBM ( evidence based medicine ) especially when we are seeking for basic information ( not tricky cases ) , as not that organized and planned as CME ( continuing medical education ) .
Its simple usable and free for anybody especially for medical students .
Some of those online medical dictionaries which i frequently use :
- MedTerms medical dictionary , from MedicineNet.com .
MedicineNet.com defines difficult medical language in easy-to-understand explanations of over 16,000 medical terms. so its simple and usable for medical students for brief summry about the medical term .
Is the Best so far , for medical protections and medical students , it has full description of the medical term with easy to browse and use . with Images and diagrams .
Brief description for medical terms .
Brief description for medical conditions .
What is Missing ?
- Web2.0 is Missing : No single web2.0 feature over all what i have visited and used .
- Spell checking and and Terms Correction !!! its so easy to use ajax these days , and its the most needed features needed there .
- Multimedia : Medical dictionaries are not just about Medical TERMS . cause Its about what the people looking for , and saving our time which is saving patients life .
Conclusion :
Online Medical dictionaries still living in Web1.0 era , no more interactivity , and usability , even using medical multimedia ( images , photos , presentations and videos ) .
